The Peacemaker Animator explains how the eagle came together

While there is no shortage of colorful and interesting characters in James Gunn’s peace makerThere is one that might be everyone’s favourite. This character is, of course, Eagly, Peacemaker (John Cena)’s best friend of the bald eagle, and while the bird certainly looked real in the HBO Max series, Eagly is pretty much the creation of stunning visual effects from Wētā FX and according to Mark Gee, Supervisor Animation Works Wētā FX, on making the peacemaker’s sidekick begins by looking at references to real birds to make the Eagly as realistic as possible.

We started with a crow, and apparently James came up to us and said, ‘Look, John Cena’s sidekick will be an American bald eagle. It must be an eagle. It should look real. So, this was quite a challenge on its own. We’ve done eagles and birds and stuff in the past. And honestly, it’s the hardest thing in visual effects to do and make it look realistic, and we only had three months or so just to develop this from scratch, it was Huge job, but first, we set out and watched a bunch of YouTube clips and hundreds of vultures clips.” ComicBook.com.

Gee went on to explain that after they obtained reference footage and photos of American bald eagles, they worked on building the Eagle to make it what it should look like—a task that involved feathering. Gee explained that one of the big challenges was making CG feathers for Eagly that looked like real feathers, and that the CG Eagle they made ended up having nearly twice as many feathers as a real bird just to give him some size. After that, there were other details – including lighting and giving the character the character.

“And then it was all about lighting and running the feathers,” Ji said. “It was a huge operation, the basic process took at least three months. We developed further when we got to episode one and two. By the time we were around episode two, Egley was pretty stable and from then on he’s just improved but it was really amazing To see his character grow in CG land. We started drawing the first episode, which was the garage scene. And it wasn’t, frankly, in terms of lighting, for us, it wasn’t the best scene to make Eagle look cool. But we evolved from there, and yes, We just developed his character as he progressed. And James, you can see James on the calls we’ve been on with him. He kind of fell in love with Eagle every time we showed him, and it was unbelievable how his character had really evolved during that time.”

The first season of Peacemaker is now streaming on HBO Max.
